Over the past 2000 years, the BIble has been a cause of pain and death. Oppressive governments from Rome to North Korea have outlawed the Bible, executing anyone who is caught with a copy of the scriptrues. At the same time, there have been thousands who have been killed because of their efforts to translate and distribute the Bible.
What is it about this book that people treasure it, even under the threat of death?

This week we finish our series on Luke, chapter 13 by looking at Jesus' sorrow over the future destruction of Jerusalem by the Roman army. Although they had many opportunities to turn to God, the people of the city refused. The theme, as with much of chapter 13, is that time can run out. We can never count on tomorrow. Today is the day to turn towards God.

Some people believe all roads lead to God. Actually, that's true. All of us, no matter which road we travel, will stand before the judgment seat of God. But Jesus says the road we travel determines our fate. Here's Luke's account of what Jesus says about the road we choose:
Luke 13:24-25 (NLTSE)
[24] "Work hard to enter the narrow door to God's Kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail. [25] When the master of the house has locked the door, it will be too late. You will stand outside knocking and pleading, 'Lord, open the door for us!' But he will reply, 'I don't know you or where you come from.'

Jesus addresses our concepts of fairness and justice
Jesus teaches about fairness and justice in response to a report that Pontius Pilate executed some people from Galillee as they worshiped in the temple. When Jesus is informed, he makes the situation very personal, pointing out that each of us has to answer to God as an individual.
